If you’ve ever seen a painting that made you stop and feel something — like really feel it — there’s a good chance it was created by Ibaia, a live wedding painter whose work captures not only the moment but the very emotion behind it.
She’s quiet, deeply talented, and one of the most fascinating artists in the Live Artist Collective. A live painter, tattoo artist, and maker of all things creative, Ibaia brings a sense of depth and authenticity to every piece she creates.
Originally from France and the Basque Country, she now lives in the hills of the Gold Coast, where she spends her time painting, crafting, and raising her daughter. When she’s not at weddings, you might find her hand-stitching a dress, shaping pottery, or finishing a painting with her little one snugly wrapped in a sling.
In this post, we’re diving deeper into Ibaia’s creative process and getting to know the person behind the stunning live wedding paintings.
Q&A with Ibaia
When did you start painting?
I can’t remember not painting. It has always been part of my life, quietly shaping the way I see the world.
Favourite thing to eat at events?
If there’s something fresh and plant-based, I’m happy. A good grazing table with lots of dips, olives, and fresh bread is always a win.
Favourite song you hear at events?
Anything acoustic or soulful. When there’s live music, it brings a whole new energy to the room, and I can feel the connection with the crowd while painting.
Song you hate hearing at events?
Nutbush. Every time.
Dream event location to paint at?
A historic chateau in France or a wedding deep in the forests of New Zealand. Somewhere with a little mystery and a lot of atmosphere. I’d love the challenge of painting such unique locations as a live painter.
Most unusual thing you’ve had to paint at an event?
A couple asked me to include their beloved chickens in the background of their wedding painting — they were roaming around the venue like VIP guests. Definitely a first for me as a live wedding painter!
Tea or coffee?
Coffee. Always. It’s my pre-painting ritual.
Cat or dog?
Dog, but I respect a cat’s independence.
Favourite thing about painting at events?
Watching people slowly become absorbed in the painting process. There’s a moment when they stop rushing around and really take it in — I love that connection.
Scariest/worst moment while painting at an event?
A strong wind knocked over my easel mid-ceremony. Lesson learned: always pack weights to keep everything steady while live painting!
Favourite moment to paint at an event?
The quiet moment right after the ceremony, when the couple is lost in their own little world, making it the perfect time for a live wedding painter to capture that emotional essence.
What’s your go-to colour that you always use?
Browns and Deep indigo. It finds its way into almost everything I create — whether it’s a backdrop or the shadows in the wedding portrait, it adds a beautiful richness.
Funniest thing that’s happened while painting?
A little flower girl kept sneaking up behind me to “help” with my painting. Eventually, she declared herself my assistant and even asked for a paintbrush of her own. It was a hilarious moment that added joy to the day.
If you weren’t doing this for a job, what would you be?
A tattoo artist — and I still am. Art is always part of my work.
If you could work with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
Frida Kahlo. Not just for her art, but for her mind, her presence, and the way she felt everything so deeply. As a live wedding painter, I often feel that same intensity when capturing special moments.
One tool or supply you can’t live without?
My tiny flat brush that’s been worn down to the perfect shape. No one else likes it. I love it. It’s my secret weapon as a live painter.
Pre-event ritual before starting a live painting?
A strong coffee, a few deep breaths, and taking a moment to soak in the atmosphere before I pick up the brush. I like to feel grounded before diving into the artwork.
One thing about live painting people don’t realise?
It’s not just about recreating a scene. As a live painter, I capture not only the visual but the emotions and energy of the moment. It’s about telling the story through paint.
Fun fact about you?
I love making things from scratch. I sew my own clothes, craft accessories for my daughter, and when I have the time, I make pottery. I also love to travel and speak several languages.
